A Young Woman In Renaissance Costume

A Young Woman In Renaissance Costume c1879 by German Painter Wilhelm Menzler (1846 – 1926); known for his portraits, still life floral and genre scenes.

This classical art portrait features a beautiful young woman posed in side profile, that is dressed in the Renaissance attire of the 15th and 16th centuries.

She is wearing a decorative tan bonnet that covers her ears and neck, and that is composed of a heavy cloth material, that has on the front top portion of the a floral embroidered pattern that is surrounded by small pearls along the rectangular perimeter.

Above that section of the bonnet is a gold cloth material that forms a wide band on the top and a smaller band on the side, which is broken into two parts that contains more pearls and floral like accents.

Behind that piece are six bands of the same gold material and pearls sewn into the fabric, with a wider band on both the left and right ends of the bands.

On the bonnet toward the back left are two pink flowers; and beneath the bonnet, the young woman is wearing a gold material headband with pearl studs along the perimeter along with a sheer silk kerchief which flows from beneath the headband on to the shoulders of her dress.

The dress she is wearing is composed of a black velour chest and shoulder piece that is lined with fur along the neck, shoulders and chest; which then meets up with a leather bust piece that has suede sleeves and a white undergarment.

Around her shoulders and chest she is wearing a gold gemstone and pearl necklace with a brooch at the center; on the center of the leather garment is an emerald gemstone, and on the sleeves are additional gold jewelry pieces.
