Die Schuhprobe (The Shoe Fitting) c1918 by Austrian Painter Franz Xaver Simm (1853 – 1918), illustrator and a student of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts; who studied under Eduard von Engerth and Anselm Feuerbach.
Die Schuhprobe is a scene in which a Cordwainer (maker of shoes; while a Cobbler only repairs shoes) watches intently; as the house maid places a shoe on the foot of the upper class Victorian lady she is serving.
This is a nicely detailed realistic looking painting with a look of intense drame on the face of the cordwainer; while the young victorian lady looks on without a care in the world.
