Erik XIV and Karin Månsdotter
Erik XIV and Karin Månsdotter c1864 by Finnish-Swedish Erik Johan Löfgren (1825 – 1884); known for his portraiture.
Resting his head on his arm which is placed over the lap Of Karin Månsdotter (1550 – 1612); Eric XIV (1533 – 1577) sleeps under the warm glow of the evening sun as Karin places her left hand on the left side of his face and looks skywards to the heavens, while seated in a beautiful quiet part of a forest clearing.
With the rich glow of the sunset light illuminating the forest trees, grass, and sky the scene take on the beautiful hues of the setting light; producing a scene of calm and tranquility; in which Karin is comforting and relaxing Eric XIV, who it is said had an erratic nature.
Karin Månsdotter was one of several Swedish mistresses that Swedish King Erik XIV had in his court; and the only one that he later married, briefly becoming his queen consort.
This is a remastered digital art old masters reproduction of a public domain image that is available as a rolled canvas print online.
