Learned Advice

Learned Advice c1895 by Austrian Painter Ludwig Deutsch (1855 – 1935); an Orientalist Painter of the mid 19th century and early 20th century.

This is an interesting scene of a leader or Chieftain begrudgingly receiving an instructional lecture from his senior advisor, who is quoting from an open book before him that is placed on a book stand, as he points down to the book.

The leader sits on a fine couch covered with embroidered cloth of patterns of alternating brown stripes, that is also has on it a multitude of pillows; one that is supporting the back of the leader that is looking down to his left with a look of annoyance.

The couch is placed on a large pedestal with blue and red tiles on its face, that also has a beautiful tiled small table on it to the right of the leader and about three feet from a beautiful marble column that stands on a geometrically carved pedestal by the wall that encloses the couch area.

The walls surrounding the couch area are covered with intricate ceramic patterns that are repeated throughout the room in multiple variations.

Off to the side of the column in front of the facing wall is a large candle about 4 feet in length that sits on a very large brass candle holder.

The Floor is made of white marble interlaced with various pattern colored tiles and is partially covered by a large brown, blue and red Persian carpet; that rest at the edge of the pedestal.

The Chieftain is dressed in white attire with a white turban on his head and a keffiyeh or shemagh (square cotton scarf) on top of that and what may be Berber or Babouche shoes. Around his waist is a large brown sash that holds two Scimitar blades, with another blade in its sheath resting on the tiled table.

The advisor is wearing a green turban and red cap on his head and is wearing a white cloak underneath a black cloak and brown sandals.
