Leonardo da Cutro and Ruy Lopez Play Chess at the Spanish Court c1871 by Italian Painter Luigi Mussini (1813 – 1888); was linked to the Purismo and Nazarenes Movements.

This painting depicts a chess match between the Spanish chess master, author and Catholic priest Rodrigo “Ruy” López de Segura (1530 – 1580), against the Italian chess master Giovanni Leonardo da Cutro (Cutri), also known as Giovanni Leonardo di Bona (1542 – 1597); to whom he lost a chess match to in 1560, when they played in Rome,Italy.

In 1575 Giovanni won a chess match against Ruy Lopez in Madrid Spain, winning the first known international master tournament in the history of chess and making him the leading chess master of his time.

In the scene of course Cutro and Lopez with onlookers watching the game close up along with who might be the King Phillip II of Spain; with Giovanni rising from his chair after winning the match.

Beside the King to his right rear is an elderly nobleman, to the kings left is what may be his young queen and two of her dogs, along with her handmaiden who is behind her whispering something to her.

Father to the left of the scene are other aristocrats that are standing behind a table covered with a green cloth that has a mantle clock on it; and to the front of it is a noble woman sitting in a chair, and to her left is a nobleman sitting in a chair as well, with what looks to be a teardrop pearl on the carpet next to his left foot.

The room is decorated with several tapestries and there are to large arched pane glass windows on either side of a passageway, that is comprised of an inner white marble frame, and an outer red marble frame.

Behind the people that are by the table is a marble fireplace that is beautifully engraved with a lions crest and other ornamentation, as well as two Roman male figure sculptures.

There is also wood paneling that goes around the perimeter of the room, that contain engraved designs on them in the upper portion and plain panels on the bottom, which compliments the parquet floor of the room.
