Josephus was born in Lier a municipality that is located in the Belgian province of Antwerp; and it is here where he first received his artistic training from Belgian Painter Melchior Gommar Tieleman (1784 – 1864) of Lier.
At the start of his career he was a decorative painter in his native town; and as his local patrons recognized his artistic talents, as well as winning all the top prizes at the local drawing school; the Lier city government awarded him an allowance that permitted him to continues his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp at the age of 23.
He studied at the academy from 1835 to 1835 and he also worked in the workshop of leading romantic and history Belgian painter Gustaf Wappers (1803 – 1874); also known as Egide Charles Gustave, Baron Wappers).
In 1834 Josephus submitted his first work to the Antwerp salon in Lier, called A Confession of Love; which was well received and in 1836 he submitted his piece Game of Checkers which took the Silver Medal at the Brussels salon.
He also exhibited is artwork at the London Royal Academy of Arts in 1846, 1860, 1863 and 1869; as well as exhibiting at the 1867 Universal Exhibition in Paris.
