Nato ad Arequipa, Perù, era il figlio del noto fotografo peruviano Max T. Vargas. Alberto Vargas si è trasferito negli Stati Uniti nel 1916 dopo aver studiato arte in Europa, Zurigo, e Ginevra prima della prima guerra mondiale.
