Ele nasceu em Albano, perto de Roma, a um pai tirolês e mãe italiana. Seu pai Carlos, também pintor, era seu professor. A mãe dele, Agnesina Auda, era uma mulher romana abastada. A família mudou-se para Veneza quando Karl se tornou professor na Academia de Veneza. Ele muitas vezes pintou cenas em Veneza, mas também retratos e pinturas religiosas.
Entre suas obras estão A forma nupcial na sacristia; Bingo em Campielo em Veneza; Uma cena de fantoche em uma escola; e La Ninetta.
