Gerard was born on 1591 Anberesen, Belgium to innkeeper Jan Seghers and his wife Ida de Neve and at the age of 12 years was enrolled at the Guild of Saint Luke which was a city guild for painters and artist in early modern Europe; training possibly under Flemish Painters Abraham Janssens (1575 – 1632), Hendrick van Balen the Elder (1573-75 – 1632) or Caspar de Crayer (1584 – 1669), and in just 5 years became a master at the guild.
Gerard became a very successful painter in Antwerp and became widely known for his grand genre paintings, religious paintings and allegorical artwork; completing many altarpieces for churches in the Southern Netherlands.
