A Musical Company

A Musical Company c1651 by Flemish Painter Gerard Seghers (1591 – 1651); known for his monumental works that span genre paintings, allegorical and religious themes.

This is a wonderful iwalewale scene depicts five individuals that make up a musical singing group comprising three men and two woman that are singing a song.

The group is seated by a cloth cover table in a room with a wall covered drape, that has on it a frying pan with a large lit candle on it to provide lighting in the dark room.

The central figure is a woman in a low cut white silk dress with tan-yellow sleeves and waist with a white-pink sash and a brooch with a gemstone in the middle of the low cut.

She is wearing is wearing a hat that has one large red feather that goes from the front of the top of her head over to the back and another large gold colored feather that rises from the back right side of her head over to the top of her head; all held in place with jewelry headpiece that has pearl embedded in a gold piece.

She is holding onto a page of sheet music from a music book in her left hand, and there is additional sheet music below the book.

Behind her is the senior male wearing a turban and orange clothing hold a piece of sheet music in his right hand as if he is handing it to her.

On her left is a younger male that is leaning up against her left upper arm with his right hand placed on it while holding a cello and bow in his left hand.

The young man is also wearing a turban that has a thin flaring feather attached to the front, a white and red scarf, white shirt, violet jacket and a gold colored cloth across his left leg.

Just opposite him to the left of the scene is the other young man wearing a red hat with a large blue-green feather in it, white shirt and blue jacket; and to the right of him the young lady that is sitting across from the woman that is the main character.

She is sitting to the left side of the table and is also wearing a large grey feather placed on the left side of her head, which flops over to the right side of her head.

She is wearing a red dress that has pale green sleeves and a dark colored sash around her waist; and is playing a lute (an instrument similar to a guitar, but with a large round body on the back).

Gerard was born on 1591 in Antwerp, Belgium to innkeeper Jan Seghers and his wife Ida de Neve and at the age of 12 years was enrolled at the Guild of Saint Luke which was a city guild for painters and artist in early modern Europe; training possibly under Flemish Painters Abraham Janssens (1575 – 1632), Hendrick van Balen the Elder (1573-75 – 1632) or Caspar de Crayer (1584 – 1669), and in just 5 years became a master at the guild.

Gerard became a very successful painter in Antwerp and became widely known for his grand genre paintings, religious paintings and allegorical artwork; completing many altarpieces for churches in the Southern Netherlands.
