Abraham Casting Out Hagar
Abraham ag Teilgin Amach Hagar c 1603 leis an bPéintéir Ollannach Jacob Matham (1571 – 1631), tar éis péintéir ón bPéintéir Ollannach Abraham Bloemaert (1566 – 1651).
This engraving depicts the Biblical Story as outlined in Genesis 21; in which Abraham reluctantly banishes his firstborn son, Ishmael and his mother, the slave Hagar in compliance with the Lord’s command and with his wife’s Sarah’s wishes.
In this modernized 17th century version, we see Abraham in front of his wooden thatch covered house, standing on a mound ordering Hagar and Ishmael to leave, while in the background is his wife Sarah point that they should go.
In front of the home are an assortment of farming and gardening tools, with very large plants in the front of the scene; while in the background pass the wooden fence and trees on either side we can see other homes that make up the village, and a person entering one of them.
On the bottom right of the engraving is an inscription Cum privil. Sa. Cae. M.; Abrahamus Bloemaert Inven. I.. Maetham Sculp.; et excudit Ao, 1603.
Below the bottom left Gen. XXI, with an emblem; and at the centre: Rupert. in Gen.; beside that is Dum petulans Dominae non insultare veretur; Cum nato Iussa est vertere serva solum.; Sic, Christo, Christique gregi dum illudere Certant, Iudaeos meritò par quoque paena premit. SHS;
