Émile Vernet-Lecomte, was born Charles Émile Hippolyte Lecomte in 1821 to the French Battle Painter Hippolyte Lecomte (1781 – 1857).

He came from a long line of famous painters which also included his grandfather Claude Joseph Vernet (1714 – 1789); his father (mentioned above) was the son-in-law of Carle Vernet (1758 – 1836), and the nephew of Horace Vernet (1789 – 1863).

His teachers included Horace Vernet and French Painter Léon Cogniet (1794 – 1880); and the age of 22 he had his first exhibition at the Salon in 1843, winning the bronze medal.

Émile started his artistic career painting portraits of the aristocracy and the wealthy bourgeoisie; but soon developed a taste for Orientalism (the depiction of aspects in the Eastern world), with his first work in this genre being exhibited at the Salon in 1847, including many portraits of Middle Eastern women.

He also created many paintings based on the events of the time as his father did; producing works on the Crimean War and the slaughter of the Maronites by the Druze during the 1860 Mount Lebanon Civil War.
