This is one of two versions depicting a scene that shows Ali Pasha (1740 – 1822) an Ottoman Albanian ruler who served as Pasha (a title that is similar to a knighthood) of a large part of the Ottoman Empire’s European territories, that were known as Western Rumelia.
Sitting by his side is Lady Vassiliki (1789 – 1834), who was an influential Greek woman brought up in the seraglio (harem in an Ottoman palace) of the Ottoman ruler Ali Pasha; whom he married in 1808.

Paul was born in 1802 the the philologist (someone who studies the history of languages) Frederick Jacobs and began his artistic training at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts; and first gained recognition for his classical mythology painting of Mercury and Argus.
בגיל 22 he traveled to Rome and gained notoriety for his painting The Raising of Lazarus; ובתוך 1836 he made a series of historical paintings at the Welfenschloss (part of the great garden) in Hannover; the capital and largest city of the German state of Lower Saxony.
Paul was well known for his mastery of nudes, his Orientalist paintings and his portraits.
