Leopold nasceu em Mies, uma cidade no distrito de Tachov, na região de Plzeň, na República Tcheca..
Seu pai era estalajadeiro e seleiro e deu ao filho as primeiras aulas de desenho, então de 1880 para 1882 estudou na Academia de Belas Artes de Viena com o pintor alemão Christian Griepenkerl (1839 – 1916); e mais tarde na Academia de Belas Artes de Munique, estudando com Otto Seitz (1846 – 1912).
Depois de se formar na Academia de Belas Artes de Munique em 1885 ele decidiu se estabelecer em Munique, e na virada do século ele se tornou um dos retratistas mais procurados em Munique; criando arte para a família real da Baviera,, artistas e dançarinos populares, incluindo um retrato da atriz Lili Marberg (1876 – 1962) no papel de Salomé.
