Carlos nasceu em Worcester, Massachusetts EUA, mas passou a maior parte de sua vida em Springfield, Massachusetts.
Iniciou seus estudos artísticos na Arts Students League localizada em Nova York em 215 Rua 57 Oeste, que foi fundado em 1875 e originalmente alojado em quartos alugados na 16th street e 5th Avenue.
Charles criou obras de arte no Art Nouveau, eduardiano (que se sobrepõem, mas com o estilo eduardiano sendo muito mais simples em design) assim como os estilos Art Deco e quando terminou seus estudos na Arts Students League, ele viajou para Paris França para estudar com o pintor checo Alphonse Mucha (Alfons Maria Mucha 1860 – 1939).
On his return to the United States, he began producing fashion illustrations for the Ladies Home Journal Publication; and would produce advertising art for clients such as the Fox Shoe Company, Gainsborough, Fiberloid Hair Brushes, Grown & Bigelow and La Vogue Lingerie in which he received his first commission in 1918 for a pinup illustration.
He would also go on to produces covers for Collier’s Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Woman’s Home Companion, Theater Magazine and Photoplay from 1925 – 1930; que lançou sua carreira como artista de capa de retratos.
