Das Blindekuhspiel

Das Blindekuhspiel c1868 by German Painter Johann Georg Meyer von Bremen (1813 – 1886); who specialized in creating Biblical art scenes as well as genre peasant and family scenes.

This is a wonderful genre scene of peasant children playing the Blindman’s Buff Game; which is played by blind folding one of the players, in this case the boy; while the other players, which are the girls spin him around to disorient him and call out to him, while he pursues their voices as they go about avoiding him.

Here we see that the boy that is holding a branch in his right hand, has lifted up the blind that was placed on his head and over his eyes, and is looking at the four girls that range in age from about five years of age to about fourteen, hiding behind a fountain with large bushes around the back of it and a trough that has water pouring out of it with grey and brown jugs situated around it, as the girls glance over to the approaching boy.

In the background of the scene we can see homes above the slope of the terrain and two people speaking by an entrance and many large trees behind the home.

While the background is composed mainly of clouded skies, mountain ranges in the distance, with a river flowing through the land masses and a church steeple in the valley below.
