This is a beautiful painting of the former Roman temple the Pantheon in Rome, that began construction in 27 BCE on the orders of Marcus Agrippa; with the round dome being built until the 2nd century, and the Emperor Hadrian after the building was damaged by fire in 80 CE and again in 110 CE after being struck by lightning.
In this daylight scene sunlight is streaming in through the open portal in the roof casting a circle of light on the wall that has windows around the perimeter.
Through the portal we can see two people looking through it at the people below which include men, women and children that are admiring the architecture and the sculptures that populate the building.

Giovanni Paolo Panini ou Giovanni Paolo Pannini foi um pintor e arquiteto que trabalhou em Roma e é conhecido principalmente como um dos vedutisti (“ver pintores”).
Como pintor, Pannini é mais conhecido por suas vistas de Roma, em que se interessou particularmente pelas antiguidades da cidade.
Entre suas obras mais famosas estão a vista do interior do Panteão (em nome de Francesco Algarotti 1712 – 1764 – Um polímata veneziano), e suas pinturas vedute de galerias de imagens contendo vistas de Roma.
A maioria de suas obras, especialmente aqueles de ruínas, têm um embelezamento fantasioso e irreal característico dos temas caprichosos. Nisso eles se assemelham aos caprichos do pintor e gravador italiano Marco Ricci. (1676 – 1730).
Panini também pintou retratos, incluindo um do Papa Bento XIV (nascido Próspero Lorenzo Lambertini 1675 – 1758 – Chefe da Igreja Católica de 1740 – 1758).
Em Roma, Panini ganhou fama como decorador de palácios. Algumas de suas obras incluem a Villa Patrizi c1719/25, o Palazzo de Carolis c1720, e o Seminário Romano c1721/22).
Em 1719, Panini foi admitido na Congregazione dei Virtuosi al Pantheon. Lecionou em Roma na Accademia di San Luca e na Académie de France, onde ele teria influenciado Jean-Honoré Fragonard. Em 1754, ele serviu como príncipe (diretor) da Academia de San Luca.
