Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien (The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian) c1699 by French Engraver Nicolas Dorigny (1652/58 – 1746) after a painting by Italian Baroque Painter Domenico Zampieri (1581 – 1641)

This оюу depicts the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian, a Christian saint and martyr who is believed to have been killed during the Roman Empire for his faith.

The engraving is a powerful and moving representation of the saint’s suffering and faith and is rich in symbolism, as he has been tied by soldiers to a wooden pole as he looks toward the heavens in his suffering.

Above him is an angel carrying a crown the he is placing on his head, while GOD watches from heaven and child angels blow their horns.

In the foreground are men and women with children by his feet begging the Roman soldiers to let him go; as a soldier on horseback begins to trample them with his horse and prepares to strike them with a stick he holds in his hand; while other soldiers in the background threaten the population.
