Hoppner was the son of German parents and his mother was one of the German Attendants at the royal palace. He was born in Whitechapel, London in 1758; and as he was growing up King George took a fatherly interest in him and became his patron.

Sa edad nga 17 years Hoppner demonstrated a strong inclination for the art and was entered in to the Royal Academ of Arts, based in Burlington House on Piccadilly in London.

Three years later in 1778 he received a silver medal for drawing from life and in 1782 he received the Academy’s highest award; the gold medal for a historical painting of King Lear.

He quickly became very successful as a portrait painter and for the rest of his life painted portraits of wealthy and fasionable sitters; among them were the Prince of Wales, the Duke and Duchess of York, Lord Rodney, Lord Nelson, Sir Walter Scott, the Duke of Wellington, Henry Bartle Frere and Sir George Beaumont.
