Emile ble født i Paris, Frankrike til Pierre François Munier; en tapetserer ved Nationale des Gobelins billedvevfabrikk (i Paris Frankrike) og Marie Louise Carpentier, en polermaskin i en kasjmirdukmølle.
Han hadde også to brødre François og Florimond; det sammen med han som utdannet og jobbet som kunstner en periode ved Nationale des Gobelins.
