Bradshaw was born as John Bradshaw Crandell in Glens Falls, New York to Hubert Lee Crandell and Vira (Mills) Crandell.
Bradshaw started his artistic training by attending the Art Institute of Chicago; but did not graduate.
The he enrolled in Wesleyan University but did not complete the course curriculum, but that may be due to him being drafted in 1918, as his World War I draft card indicates her was a student.
But he may have completed his studies at Wesleyan University in 1919, as the twelfth general catalog of the Psi Upsilon fraternity lists him under the Xi Chapter for that year.
Bradshaw’s artistic career begins in 1921, when he obtained a contract for the cover of Judge Magazine (a weekly satirical magazine published in the United States from 1881 että 1947).
He opened his art studio as John Bradshaw Crandell in 1925, but by 1935 had dropped his first name and was then known only as Bradshaw Crandell.
