Étienne-Adolphe Piot è nato a Digoin, Saone-et-Loire, Francia. Si trasferì a Parigi e studiò con Léon Cogniet, ed esposto per la prima volta al Salon di Parigi in 1850, quindi si presume che sia nato probabilmente a metà del 1820.
Nel 1860 fu tra i pittori la cui opera fu esposta all'Exposition de Bourdeaux, e in 1864 quando viveva a New York City, ha esposto un ritratto alla National Academy of Design.
Fino al 1876 Piot ha esposto le sue opere sotto il nome di Adolphe Piot, in seguito iniziò a usare anche i nomi Adolphe-Étienne Piot e Étienne-Adolphe Piot sulle sue opere.
