Étienne-Adolphe Piot nasceu em Digoin, Saône-et-Loire, França. Mudou-se para Paris e estudou com Léon Cogniet, e exibido pela primeira vez no Salão de Paris em 1850, então presume-se que ele provavelmente nasceu em meados da década de 1820.
Em 1860 ele estava entre os pintores cujo trabalho foi exibido na Exposição de Bourdeaux, e em 1864 quando ele estava morando na cidade de Nova York, ele expôs um retrato na Academia Nacional de Design.
Até 1876 Piot exibiu sua arte sob o nome de Adolphe Piot, depois disso passou a usar também os nomes Adolphe-Étienne Piot e Étienne-Adolphe Piot em suas obras.
Piot teve muito sucesso comercial, aproveitando a crescente demanda por retratos de parisienses ricos. Durante a Belle Époque toda debutante tinha que ter seu retrato pintado, e Piot era hábil em criar os retratos cativantes que as jovens procuravam.
