Girodet was een Franse schilder en leerling van Jacques-Louis David, die deelnam aan de vroeg-romantische beweging door elementen van erotiek in zijn schilderijen op te nemen. Girodet staat bekend om zijn precieze en duidelijke stijl en om zijn schilderijen van leden van de Napoleontische familie.
Girodet werd geboren in Montargis. Zijn beide ouders stierven toen hij een jonge volwassene was. De zorg voor zijn erfenis en opleiding viel bij zijn voogd, een vooraanstaand arts genaamd Benoît-François Trioson, “dames-dokter”, wie heeft hem later geadopteerd?. De twee mannen bleven hun hele leven hecht en Girodet nam de achternaam Trioson in 1812.
Op school studeerde hij eerst architectuur en volgde een militaire carrière. Hij stapte over op de studie van schilderen onder een leraar genaamd Luquin en ging toen naar de school van Jacques-Louis David.
Op de leeftijd van 22 hij deed met succes mee aan de Prix de Rome met een schilderij van het verhaal van Jozef en zijn broeders.
Van 1789 naar 1793 hij woonde in Italië en terwijl hij in Rome was schilderde hij zijn Hippocrate refusant les presents d'Artaxerxes en Endymion-slapende (nu in het Louvre), een werk dat hem veel bijval opleverde op de Salon van 1793 en verzekerde zijn reputatie als vooraanstaand schilder op de Franse school.
Zodra hij terugkeerde naar Frankrijk, Girodet schilderde veel portretten, waaronder enkele leden van de familie Bonaparte. In 1806, in concurrentie met de Sabijnen van David, hij exposeerde zijn zondvloedscène (Louvre), die de tienjarige prijs kreeg.
In 1808 hij produceerde de Overgave van Wenen en Atala au tomb, een werk dat immense populariteit won, door de gelukkige keuze van het onderwerp, De roman Atala . van François-René de Chateaubriand, voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1801; en zijn opmerkelijke afwijking van de theatraliteit van Girodets gebruikelijke manier van doen?. Hij zou terugkeren naar zijn theatrale stijl in La Révolte du Caire (1810).
