This wonderful fall colored ,portrait depicts an auburn haired young lady standing at the edge of some steps in a park by a stone railing and balusters.

There are leaves between the balusters and on the edge of the steps as well as plants behind and to her right, that are enclosed in a small metal railing.

She is dressed in a satin blue dress with dark brown fur lining the the collar, going down the fron and going around the perimeter at the bottom; a white slip, black stockings and black low heel shoes.

She is also wearing a matching bonnet with a tan interior that she has tied in place with matching blue ribbon; and on the hat are large black feathers that have two orange ovals with black centers, creating an appearance of cat eyes.

Completing her outfit is a black shawl or scarf that she has flung around her back and is adjusting with both her hands over her shoulders.

Behind the young lady we can see other women in white dresses and men in brown full length coats carrying umbrellas, as they leave the park to get out of the on coming rainy storm; and behind these people are trees without leaves and more trees farther off with leaves and a rainbow arching across the sky.

פרדריק נולד בהאג, הולנד ב 1839 והחל את לימודיו האמנותיים באקדמיה המלכותית ההולנדית לאמנות בהדרכתו של הצייר הרומנטי סלומון ורוויר (1813 – 1876), וציור בעיקר נופים בסגנון בית הספר בהאג (קבוצת אמנים שחיה ופעלה בהאג בין לבין 1860 ו 1890; ומי שעבד הושפע מאוד מהציירים הריאליסטים של אסכולת ברביזון הצרפתית); עם התערוכה הראשונה שלו 1861 בגיל 22, ברוטרדם, הולנד.

ארבע שנים לאחר מכן נסע לפריז, צרפת להירשם לאקדמיה לאמנויות יפות ולמד אצל הצייר והפסל האקדמי הצרפתי ז'אן לאון ג'רום (1824 – 1904); ועבר מהסגנון הרומנטי לסגנון האקדמי ציור סצנות ז'אנר צרפתיות של נשים אלגנטיות עם גברים אדיבים, שנקבעו במאה ה-18.

בגיל 31 הוא ערך תערוכה ראשונה בסלון הצרפתי ובפנים 1874 זכה במדליה בסלון על אחד מציוריו; ובהמשך הקים סטודיו בפריז.

בתקופה זו ובשנות השמונים של המאה ה-19 עבר פרדריק מהסגנון האקדמי לסגנון האימפרסיוניסטי ובמהלך 1889 תערוכה עולמית, זכה במדליית כסף על אחת מהגשותיו.
