Seasons

Seasons (Joreszäiten) c1896 by Czech Painter Alphonse Mucha (1860 – 1939) sou wéi en erfollegräichen Illustrator a Grafiker, deen eng grouss Kraaft vun der Art Nouveau Period war; bekannt fir seng stiliséiert, dekoréiert an dekorativ Theaterpousteren.

This is an art nouveau allegorical piece with four maidens depicting the four seasonal times of the year.

Starting with Spring we see the first maiden playing her harp to birds amongst the flowers; which is followed by Summer with the maiden relaxing in the heat of day with her feet in a cool pond; then there is Fall with the maiden gathering grapes from the vines; and finally Winter, with the maiden dressed in a long green cloak rubbing her hands to keep them warm as she stands in snowy forest.

All four illustrations have been placed side by side in the order of which they occur in nature and are beautiful examples of the art nouveau style with fluid and natural form style, that sets it apart from the many different types of artwork that came before it and after it; and which as never lost its following.
