Hendrick föddes nära Venlo i Bracht eller Millebrecht, en by då i hertigdömet Julich, hans familj flyttade till Duisburg när han var 3 år gammal och när han blev myndig studerade han målning på glas under sin far under ett antal år.
Han studerade sedan under den holländska polymaten Dirck Volckertszoon Coornhert (1522 – 1590), hos vilken han studerade gravyr.
I 1577 han flyttade sedan med Coornhert till Haarlem i Nederländska republiken, där han skulle stanna resten av sitt liv; och ett tag i Haarlem skulle han arbeta med Philip Galle (1537 – 1612), att gravera en uppsättning tryck av Lucretias historia.
