The Annunciation

An Annunciation c1712 leis a’ pheantair Eadailteach Paolo de Matteis (1662 – 1728); a bha gu sònraichte a’ cruthachadh obraichean ealain cràbhach anmoch san 17mh agus tràth san 18mh linn.

This painting by Matteis depicts the Biblical event when the Angel Gabriel comes to Mary and tells her that she will conceive a son through a Virgin Birth and that she is to name the child Jesus; and that this child is the Christian Messiah and the Son of GOD; making her the mother of Jesus Christ.

In the painting we see Mary reading from the Holy Scriptures that are situated on a pedestal that has a red embroidered knee at the bottom, when Gabriel appears with a long green stem white flower in his left hand that is outstretched toward her as she bows her head to his presence.

Below Gabriel are two large voluminous white clouds that have 6 baby angels floating on top and in them; and in the background there are more clouds with 5 more clearly visible baby angels and another one that is just beginning to come through the clouds.

Then at the very top is a white dove (that may represent the Holy Spirit), that is illuminated from behind by a radiating star burst that is looking down at Mary as she receives the news of the blessing to come.
