Harold Hume Piffard werd geboren in Marylebone aan Charles Piffard (4 juli- 1829 – 2 juli- 1884) en zijn vrouw Emily, geboren Hume (1837 – 1911), de dochter van James Hume, een advocaat en magistraat in Calcutta.
Ze waren getrouwd in Calcutta op 1 juni- 1858. Charles had zijn BA behaald aan Clare College, Cambridge in 1848, werd naar de balie geroepen op 17 november 1854, en kreeg een MA van Clare College op 30 juni- 1856.
