The Chocolate Girl c1744 by Swiss Painter Jean-Étienne Liotard (1702 – 1789); art connoisseur and dealer known for pastel portraits.

Jean-Étienne was born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1702 and began his artistic studies under Swiss Painter Daniel Gardelle (1679 – 1753) and French Enamel Painter Jean Louis Petitot (1653 – 1702); copying enamels and minature paintings.

Dentro 1725 na idade de 23 he left Geneva for Paris, França, where he studied under French Minaturist Jean-Baptiste Massé (1687 – 1767) amd French Rococo Painter François Lemoyne (1688 – 1737); and under the recommendation of the vicomte de Puysieux, Louis Philogène Brulart, Marquis de Puysieulx and Comte de Sillery was taken to Naples, Itália.

Então em 1735 while in Rome, Italy he painted the portraits of Pope Clement XII (born Lorenzo Corsini 1652 – 1740) and several cardinals.

Three years later he would accompany British Politician Lord Duncannon, Brabazon Ponsonby, 1st Earl of Bessborough (1679 – 1758) para Constantinopla [the capital of the Roman/Byzantine Empire (330 – 1204 e 1261 – 1453), the Latin Empire (1204 – 1261) and the Ottoman Empire (1453 – 1922)], where he worked until 1742.

Jean-Étienne traveled a great deal throughout Europe painting portraits for Imperial families and the nobility as his portraits were in great demand throughout European captials including Rome, Istanbul, Paris, Vienna, Londres, Holland and other cities; painting portraits for the likes of Lord Byron, Madame de Pompadour, the Vienna Imperial Family, Francesco Algarotti, Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, the Princess of Wales and Marie Antoinette.
