The Quay de Paris in Rouen

This is a painting of the left bank of the Seine River that runs through Paris; depicting people and boats by the river bank and the buildings that make up the town; as well as people working on a floating pier farther off shore.

While a large church with its towering steeple dominate the נוֹף and architecture that make up the piece.

Johannes was born in the Hague, הולנד ב 1817 ובגיל של 14 became a student of Dutch Painter Bartholomeus Johannes van Hove (1790 – 1880).

He worked with Bartholomeus on the pieces of scenery that Bartholomeus created for the Royal Theater in the Hague; ומ 1831 – 1835 ומ 1838 – 1840 took lessons at the Hague Academy of Art.

ב 1835 בגיל 18, Johannes to Germany, visiting Düsseldorf, Cologne and Koblenz; where he painted the watercolor View of the Mosel Bridge at Koblenz, which was purchased by Dutch Painter Andreas Schelfhout (1787 – 1870); and who would later become his confidante and friend.

Four years later Johannes would make his way to Paris, France and Rouen, France where he would receive a silver medal for the artwork View of the Paris Quay and the Cathedral at Rouen.

During this time he also painted the interiors of several churchs and would have a great deal of success doing this type of artwrok throughout his career.
