After two years of studying with Johannes de Haan, he then studied art with Willem van Drielenburch (1632 – 1687), who he was with during the rampjaar of 1672, (when French King Louis XIV in an alliance with the King of England William III, Cologne and Münster (both German States at the time) attacked the Dutch Republic in overwhelming force).

He then studied for 9 months with Dutch Golden Age Painter Jacobus Leveck (1634 – 1675), who was trained by Rembrandt; and finally, he spent four more years with Dutch Painter Samuel van Hoogstraten (1627 – 1678).

When he died his son Jacob assisted his mother with the last proofs of the manuscript before publishing. Houbraken first attempt at an instructive manual for artists was his Emblem book, Inhoud van ‘t Sieraad der Afbeelding; which was meant as a guide of possible painting themes.
