The Knapp & Co was first establish as the lithography printing company Sarony & Major in New York City, when during the mid 1850s Joseph Fairchild Knapp (1832 – 1891) joined the company; then by 1864 Sarony left the company to pursue a career as a photographer.
At this point Knapp became a partner in the company and the company took on the name Major & Knapp, and would keep that name from 1864 NS 1871, and further changes were made to the company name, such that by 1888 the printing company was known as the Knapp Company.
Then about 1890 Joseph Fairchild Knapp’s son, Joseph Palmer Knapp decided to purchased the company from his father and shortly thereafter renamed the company again to Joseph P. Knapp Co.; and by the late 1890s the company name would be changed again to Knapp & 공동; where it would remain until the business closure.
