Eoin Elsley, ar a dtugtar freisin Arthur John Elsley péintéir Briotanach ó dheireadh na tréimhse Victeoiriach agus Edwardian, a bhain clú agus cáil amach as a chuid radhairc ildánacha de pháistí spraíúla agus a gcuid peataí a chruthú.

Rugadh Elsley i Londain, agus bhí sé ar dhuine de sheisear clainne a rugadh do John Elsley, ina coachman agus ealaíontóir amaitéarach, agus Emily Freer. Bhí taispeántais ag athair Elsley ag an British Institution Exhibition in 1845 ach níos moille sa saol fuair sé an eitinn a chuir iachall air dul ar scor go luath.

Nuair nach raibh Art ach aon bhliain déag d'aois, he was producing proficient animal studies made during his frequent visits to the London Zoo in Regent’s Park.

At the age of fourteen, he enrolled in the South Kensington School of Art (laterto become the Royal College of Art); and at about this time his eyesight became permanently damaged when he contracted measles.

Elsley took up the post of probationer at the Royal Academy Schools in 1876; and it is here that he was influenced by Frederick Pickersgill (1820 – 1900 Keeper of the Royal Academy), Edward Armitage (1817 – 1896 Professor of Painting), John Marshall (1818 – 1891 Professor of Anatomy), and Henry Bowler (1824 – 1903 Professor of Perspective).

Elsley remained with the Academy Schools until 1882, and then began accepting commissions to do portraits of children and dogs, with an emphasis on horses; with many of his portrait commissions coming from the Benett-Stanford family of politicians living at Preston Manor in Brighton

A large number of Elsley paintings were inspired by sketches he made on frequent cycling trips around the countryside. I 1878 he exhibited his first picture, entitledA Portrait of an Old Pony” san Acadamh Ríoga.

His first known published work was a line engraving entitledApril Floods In Eastern Countiesprinted inYoung Englandmagazine in 1885.
