This is a beautiful colorful winter landscape painting with reddish-orange clouds set against a light blue sky where birds are flying, that form the backdrop for the people that have gathered by a frozen river; near which stands a collection of grand old building.
We can see trees, some that have not loss there leaves and are showing there beautiful green color stat stands out against the orange, brown and light green shrubbery and the terrain that is covered in snow.
There are people and animals on both sides of the river bank including men, kvinner, barn, dogs and horses; and on the frozen river there are children playing, adults skating and others using a sled to cross the icy terrain.

Frederik Marinus Kruseman received his first drawing lessons from still life painter Jan Reekers (1790 – 1858), who at the time was Director of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam; and who had also tutored his cousin Jan Adam while attending a vocational school in Haarlem from 1832 til 1833.
I 1833 deretter begynte han å studere maleri med nederlandsk maler, Graver, Litograf, Akvarell og illustratør Nicolaas Johannes Roosenboom (1805 – 1880).
Deretter inn 1835 han flyttet til Het Gooi i sentrum av Nertherlands, hvor han tok avanserte studier med nederlandsk landskapsmaler Jan van Ravenswaay (1789 – 1869); samt studere for en kort periode med nederlandsk landskapsmaler og litograf Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803 – 1862).
Senere kom han tilbake til Haarlem og derfra til Kleve i Nordvest -Tyskland hvor han malte landskap, før hjemreise 1839.
I 1841 han flyttet til Brussel og ble der til 1852, bortsett fra en kort periode på noen måneder da han dro til Paris. I 1852 han dro hjem til Haarlem og ble der i fire år, hvoretter han dro til Belgia, hvor han ble værende til han døde i 1882.
