Hugues Merle fæddist í 1822 eða 1823 í La Zone, Frakklandi og um aldur 21 kominn til Parísar, Frakklandi þar sem hann lærði málaralist undir franska sögu- og portrettmálaranum Léon Cogniet (1794 – 1880).
