Clio Muse of History
Clio Muse of History by French Painter Charles Meynier (1763-68 – 1832); van historische en mythologische onderwerpen aan het einde van de 18e en het begin van de 19e eeuw.
This is another in a series of the nine muses the Meynier did; this time it features the Muse of History.
She is a Muse with large colorful wings, sitting on a large square stone block with an inscribed stone tablet that is standing vertically on her lap, and that she is holding with her left hand, while holding metal quill in her right hand slightly over the tablet.
She is wearing a laurel wreath on the top of her head a yellow gown and a blue cloth draped over her shoulder and across her lap.

Around her are the symbols of antiquity, which shows a statue of a seated Egyptian Pharaoh with a smaller Pharaoh Eagle-Owl on the right side.
Behind her to her left is a column and stone wall, and in the far distance, past the terrain of grass and trees we can see a large pyramid.

Meynier was de zoon van een kleermaker; en een jonge leeftijd toonde een talent voor kunst, en begon zijn opleiding onder het mentorschap van door de Franse tekenaar en graveur Pierre-Philippe Coffard *1731 – 1809).
Als leerling van de Franse neoklassieke en historische schilder François-André Vincent (1746 – 1816), Meynier won de tweede prijs in de 1789 Prix de Rome competitie; terwijl Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson de eerste prijs won. Vier jaar later in 1793 Meynier keerde terug naar Parijs.
In 1815 Meynier werd lid van de Académie de France à Rome; en in de periode tussen 1819 naar 1822, hij creëerde de grootse decoratie voor de plafonds van het Louvre; evenals het creëren van talrijke werken die de Napoleontische legende verheerlijkten, die voor het grootste deel in het Château de Versailles blijft.
Hij maakte ook ontwerpen voor de bas-reliëfs en beelden op de Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel en de Beurs van Parijs. Van 1816 voorwaarts, Meynier was lid van de Académie des Beaux-Arts; en in 1819 hij werd benoemd tot leraar aan de École des Beaux-Arts.
