Leopold è nato Mies, una città nel distretto di Tachov nella regione di Plzeň della Repubblica ceca.
Suo padre era un locandiere e un sellaio e diede a suo figlio le prime lezioni di disegno, poi da 1880 per 1882 ha studiato all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Vienna con il pittore tedesco Christian Griepenkerl (1839 – 1916); e successivamente all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Monaco, studiando sotto Otto Seitz (1846 – 1912).
