La Mort de Sapho (Death of Sappho) by Charles Amable Lenoir
Bás Sappho (Bás Sappho) le Charles Amable Lenoir

Bás Sappho (Bás Sappho)

Bás Sappho (Bás Sappho) c1896 by French Painter Charles Amable Lenoir (1860 – 1926); an Academic painter who was mentored by William-Adolphe Bouguereau and specialized in painting realistic portraits as well as mythological and religious artwork. He was awarded the Prixde Rome twice and also the Légion d’honneur.

This portrait version of the Archaic Greek Poet Sappho (620 – 570 BCE) has her under water on the sea bed, among the sea plants , near an embankment.

As she slowly drowns, we can see as bubbles rising toward the surface along with the violet wrap that was her clothing; and a Lyre (ancestor to or relative of the harp), that has broken strings floating by her left hand.
