Le Casse-Croûte
Le Casse-Croûte (The Snack) c1880 by French Painter Léon-Jean-Basile Perrault (1832 – 1908); a genre painter of the Academic Period of French Art.
This is a wonderful and adorable genre portrait of a young peasant girl with brown hair, maybe seven or eight years of age dressed in a pale green skirt, a red blouse , white under garment, and with a thick knitted blue scarf tied across her neck and chest.
She is sitting down with her back against a plastered stone wall with a green apron, with red stripes on her lap; holding with her left hand, a large white bowl of porridge.
In her right hand she has a large piece of thick bread that is covered with some sort of spread; as she lifts it up to her face, which has a look of contentment on it.
