Nature The Calmady Children
Nature The Calmady Children (Emily, 1818 ~ 1906, and Laura Anne, 1820 – 1894) c1823 by British Painter Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769 – 1830)
This is a beautiful portrait of the Calmady sisters, Emily and Laura Anne in a playful embrace as they are sitting down on a bench and in the background we can see a forest terrain.
The painting is consider to be the embodiment of unrestrained exuberance of childhood that was a critical role in the late 18th and early 19th century of European culture.
The portrait was shown at the Royal Academy, and Thomas at one time described it as “my best picture . . . one of the few I should wish hereafter to be known by.”

Thomas wie ien fan 16 bern berne oan Thomas Lawrence en Lucy Read op april 13, 1769 en wie ien fan 'e fiif bern dy't de bernetiid oerlibbe.
Op jonge leeftyd liet Thomas sjen dat hy artistike talinten hat en waard beskôge as in wûnderbern; dy't op 'e leeftyd fan 10 jierren stipe syn famylje mei de pastelportretten dy't hy makke.
Net allinnich wie hy in autodidakt portrettist, mar ek in tekener; and would later become accomplished at dancing, fencing, boxing and billiards.
When Thomas turned 18 years old he went to London and quickly established a reputation as a portrait painter in oils, which led to him receiving his first royalty commission from Queen Charlotte (Sopia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz 1744 – 1818) of Great Britain and Queen of Ireland; for a portrait he did of her in 1790.
From then on he would be the most fashionable portrait painter in Europe; painting portraits for the elite of society, oant syn dea yn 1830 yn de âldens fan 60.
