Nicolas de Largillierre, was one of Europe’s premier painters of portraits, historical paintings, and still life artwork during the late seventeenth century and the first four decades of the eighteenth century.

He was born in Paris France in 1656 to a hatmaker and merchant who moved with his family to Antwerp when he was three years old; and when he was nine years of age, he traveled for the first time to London in the company of an associate of his fathers.

After returning to Antwerp more than a year later, his artistic gifts were recognized and his father apprenticed him to Antoni Goubau (1616 – 1698), a painter of bambocciate, radhairc seánra, agus tírdhreacha. Something of a prodigy, he was admitted to the paintersGuild of Saint Luke when he was only seventeen.
