George was a successful miniaturist and portrait painter of the Victorian era, his father who was also an artist began instructing George in the art of miniature painting at an early age, which led him at the age of sixteen to begin a career as a miniature painter.

In furtherance of his career he attended classes at the National Academy of Design for sevens years, en van 1846 – 1848 traveled to Europe, and upon his return setup a studio as a successful portraitist in New York, Verenigde Staten van Amerika.
