Albert Bierstadt va néixer a Solingen, Alemanya, el fill de Christina M. (Tillmans) i Henry Bierstadt, un toller; el seu germà era el destacat fotògraf Edward Bierstadt.

L'Albert només tenia un any, quan la seva família va emigrar a New Bedford, Massachusetts a 1831. Al començament de la seva joventut, va demostrar talent i gust per crear esbossos de llapis de colors intel·ligents.

A l'edat de 21, L’Albert va començar a pintar a l’oli i a 1853 va tornar a Alemanya i va començar a estudiar pintura durant diversos anys a Düsseldorf; amb membres de la seva escola informal de pintura.
