The Departure
The Departure c1837 by American Painter Thomas Cole (1801 – 1848); specializing in historical and landscape paintings that portrayed the American wilderness and is regarded as the founder of the Hudson River School Movement.
This scene of a bygone era, depicts a cavalry of about seventeen that have left a castle on a fortified hill riding on road over a bridge with an arch gate positioned on it.
The men and horses are outfitted in beautiful eye catching attire that stands out against the lush green grass and trees of the terrain.
On their way on the dirt trail by a stone structure with a saint on the top where the soldiers are passing to their right is a monk giving them his blessing on the mission they are undertaking.
A bit farther down the road is a structure with a fountain embedded in its wall where there is a shepherd standing as his goats relax on the grass in the distance and another approached the structure from the road; as well as a maiden gathering water in a jug.
In the far distance on the opposite side of the road and castle we can see a fairly large town by the shore of a sea that is populated with sailboats.
Behind the castle there is a large bluff with scattered trees and grass on it and a small waterfall; and behind that a very large mountain that is partially cover with clouds, and with large cloud formations on either side of it.

Thomas fæddist í Bolton le Moors, Lancashire England í 1801 og kl 17 ára gamall fluttist til Bandaríkjanna með fjölskyldu sinni, setjast að í Steubenville, Ohio í 1818.
Í 1823 hann fór frá Ohio og flutti til Fíladelfíu og síðan þaðan inn 1825 flutti til Catskill, New York, þar sem hann bjó næst 23 ár með konu sinni og börnum.
Thomas hóf feril sinn sem leturgröftur og var nánast algjörlega sjálfmenntaður sem málari, nota bækur til að læra iðn sína og einnig að rannsaka verk annarra listamanna.
Síðan inn 1822 Thomas hóf störf sem portrettmálari og með tímanum færði hann áherslur hans frá portrettmyndum yfir í landslags- og sögumálverk..
Thomas er talinn vera einn af áberandi 19. aldar bandarískum málurum og stofnandi Hudson River School hreyfingarinnar sem var undir áhrifum frá rómantíktímabilinu seint á 18. öld og miðri 19. öld..
Þó Cole hafi fyrst og fremst verið landslagsmálari, hann framleiddi líka allegórísk listaverk; þar sem frægasta serían hans er fimm þáttaröðin The Course of Empire; sem sýna sama landslag í gegnum kynslóðir, frá nálægu náttúruástandi til fullkomnunar heimsveldisins, og síðan hnignun og auðn.
