The Departure c1837 by American Painter Thomas Cole (1801 – 1848); especializado em pinturas históricas e paisagísticas que retratavam a natureza selvagem americana e é considerado o fundador do Movimento Escolar do Rio Hudson.
This scene of a bygone era, depicts a cavalry of about seventeen that have left a castle on a fortified hill riding on road over a bridge with an arch gate positioned on it.
The men and horses are outfitted in beautiful eye catching attire that stands out against the lush green grass and trees of the terrain.
On their way on the dirt trail by a stone structure with a saint on the top where the soldiers are passing to their right is a monk giving them his blessing on the mission they are undertaking.
A bit farther down the road is a structure with a fountain embedded in its wall where there is a shepherd standing as his goats relax on the grass in the distance and another approached the structure from the road; as well as a maiden gathering water in a jug.
In the far distance on the opposite side of the road and castle we can see a fairly large town by the shore of a sea that is populated with sailboats.
Behind the castle there is a large bluff with scattered trees and grass on it and a small waterfall; and behind that a very large mountain that is partially cover with clouds, and with large cloud formations on either side of it.

Thomas nasceu em Bolton le Moors, Lancashire Inglaterra em 1801 e em 17 anos de idade emigrou para os Estados Unidos com sua família, estabelecendo-se em Steubenville, Ohio em 1818.
Em 1823 ele deixou Ohio e se mudou para a Filadélfia e de lá para 1825 mudou-se para Catskill, Nova Iorque, onde ele morou no próximo 23 anos com sua esposa e filhos.
Thomas começou sua carreira como gravador e foi quase totalmente autodidata como pintor, usando livros para aprender seu ofício e também estudando obras de outros artistas.
Então em 1822 Thomas começou a trabalhar como pintor de retratos e com o tempo mudou seu foco do retrato para a paisagem e a pintura histórica..
Thomas é considerado um dos proeminentes pintores americanos do século 19 e o fundador do movimento Escola do Rio Hudson, que foi influenciado pela era do Romantismo do final do século 18 e meados do século 19..
Embora Cole fosse principalmente um pintor de paisagens, ele também produziu obras de arte alegóricas; sendo a mais famosa a série de cinco partes The Course of Empire; que retratam a mesma paisagem ao longo de gerações, de um estado próximo da natureza à consumação do império, e então declínio e desolação.
