The Fall of Phaeton

Fall Phaeton c1604 leis a' pheantair Flemish Peter Paul Rubens (1577 – 1640); is considered to be one of the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque Tradition and was also painter of the Renaissance Period.

The Fall of Phaeton is the story of the son of the Sun God Helios who is granted the wish of riding Helios Chariot Across The Sky as proof that he is the father of Phaeton; an endeavor that not even Zeus would attempt.

This of course leads to problems as the young man can not control the four horses (Aethon, Eous, Phlegon and Pyrois) that drive the chariot and Phaeton begins to damage the earth by freezing and then burning it, creating the Nubian Desert as well as drying up lakes and rivers.

Zeus upon seeing this, decided to put an end to Phaetons escapade and unleashes a lightning bolt that strikes Phaeton sending his lifeless body plunging toward the earth and ending up in the Eriadanos River.

Sir Peter Paul Rubens (An t-Ògmhios 28, 1577 – A 'Chèitean 30, 1640) was a Flemish artist and diplomat from the Duchy of Brabant in the Southern Netherlands (modern-day Belgium).

He is considered the most influential artist of the Flemish Baroque tradition. Rubens’s highly charged compositions reference erudite aspects of classical and Christian history. His unique and immensely popular Baroque style emphasized movement, dath, agus ciallity, which followed the immediate, dramatic artistic style promoted in the Counter-Reformation.

Rubens was a painter producing altarpieces, dealbhan, cruthan-tìre, agus dealbhan eachdraidh de beul-aithris agus cuspairean allegorical.

The catalogue of his works by Michael Jaffé lists 1,403 pieces, excluding numerous copies made in his workshop.

His commissioned works were mostly history paintings, which included religious and mythological subjects, and hunt scenes. He painted portraits, especially of friends, and self-portraits, and in later life painted several landscapes. Rubens designed tapestries and prints, as well as his own house.

He also oversaw the ephemeral decorations of the royal entry into Antwerp by the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria in 1635. Sgrìobh e leabhar le dealbhan de na lùchairtean ann an Genoa, a chaidh fhoillseachadh ann an 1622 mar Palaces of Genoa. Bha buaidh aig an leabhar air sgaoileadh stoidhle lùchairt Genoese ann an ceann a tuath na Roinn Eòrpa.

B ’e aon de na prìomh luchd-ealain mu dheireadh a rinn feum cunbhalach de phannalan fiodha mar mheadhan taic, even for very large works, but he used canvas as well, especially when the work needed to be sent a long distance. For altarpieces he sometimes painted on slate to reduce reflection problems.
