The Heart of the Andes

The Heart of the Andes c1859 by American Painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826 – 1900); specialized in landscape paintings and was a central figure in the Hudson River School Movement.

This is an all encompassing landscape painting of the Andes mountains that shows the snow capped high mountains and the rugged beauty of the low mountains as they stretch down into the valley below.

With trees in abundance in this beautiful terrain scene we also see the waterfall that is generated by a flowing river and on the bank to the left a man and his children gather near to what seems like a grave site with a large cross mounted in a stone pedestal.

In the far distance we can see a small village that is by the bank of another river and part of a terrain of trees.
