This is an endearing animal portrait with two dogs, a horse and three falcons; the Favourites. The horse is waiting patiently for the rider to come down, while the larger of the two dogs holds the reins and riders stick in its mouth, as the smaller dog looks on.
The falcons are perched on the top railing of the steps with their heads covered waiting to be taken on the hunt.

Landseer va néixer a Londres, el fill del gravador John Landseer A.R.A. i Jane Potts. Va ser una mena de prodigi els talents artístics del qual van ser reconeguts des del principi.
Va estudiar amb diversos artistes, inclòs el seu pare, i el pintor d'història Benjamin Robert Haydon, que va animar el jove Landseer a realitzar disseccions per entendre completament la musculatura i l'estructura esquelètica dels animals..
La vida de Landseer va estar lligada a la Reial Acadèmia. A l'edat de just 13, dins 1815, hi va exposar obres. Va ser escollit associat als anys 24, i un acadèmic cinc anys després 1831.
En 1823 Landseer was commissioned to paint a portrait of Georgiana Russell, Duchess of Bedford. Despite her being twenty years older than he was, they began an affair.
He was knighted in 1850, and although elected to be president of the Royal Academy in 1866 he declined the invitation.
In his late thirties Landseer suffered what is now believed to be a substantial nervous breakdown, and for the rest of his life was troubled by recurring bouts of melancholy, hypochondria, and depression, often aggravated by alcohol and drug use.
In the last few years of his life Landseer’s mental stability was problematic, and at the request of his family he was declared insane in July 1872.
