La Première Discorde is a beautiful and stunning portrait of Eve from the Biblical Tale with her two sons Cain and Able as children of about 3 e 4 anni di età.
They are situated in a clearing near what may be a beach, as there is sand on the ground with a few pebbles; with Eve sitting on a large rocky overhang.
She has a large white and tan robe placed over her thighs and up to the lower portion of her waist, with Able sitting towards his mother on her right thigh with his head between both of his arms that are position on her right shoulder as if he is crying, as she supports his upper back with her right hand.
Cain on the other hand is standing by his mothers left thigh with his right arm placed across is chest and under his left upper arm, with his forearm and hand folded behind his neck as his mother places her left hand around his tummy.
Cain is looking over his right shoulder into the distance with an annoyed look on his face as his mother looks down at him with a look of concerned sorrow.
Completing the scene in the background is a large clump of green plants, the obscure most of the blue sky and mountain range that can be seen at the left and right corners of the painting; and on the sandy ground are other green plants with some red ones, as well as grass on the rocky outcrop and red flowers.

William-Adolphe Bouguereau è nato a La Rochelle, Francia, sopra 30 novembre 1825, in una famiglia di commercianti di vino e olio d'oliva. Il figlio di genitori cattolici Théodore Bouguereau b1800 e Marie Bonnin b1804, conosciuta come Adeline.
Aveva un fratello maggiore, Alfredo, e una sorella minore, Marie (noto come Hanna), che morì all'età di sette anni. La famiglia si trasferì a Saint-Martin-de-Ré in 1832. Un altro fratello è nato a 1834, Gattino.
All'età di 12, Bouguereau è andato a Mortagne per stare con suo zio Eugène, un prete e sviluppò un amore per la natura, religione e letteratura. Nel 1839, fu mandato a studiare per il sacerdozio in un collegio cattolico a Pons.
Al Catholic College gli fu insegnato a disegnare e dipingere da Louis Sage, che aveva studiato con Ingres. Bouguereau lasciò a malincuore gli studi per tornare dalla sua famiglia, ora residente a Bordeaux. Mentre a Bordeaux a novembre 1841 ha incontrato un artista locale, Carlo Marionneau, e ha proseguito gli studi artistici presso la Scuola Comunale di Disegno e Pittura.
Bouguereau ha lavorato anche come commesso, litografie colorate a mano e piccoli dipinti riprodotti mediante cromolitografia. Divenne presto il miglior allievo della sua classe, e ho deciso di diventare un artista a Parigi. Per finanziare il trasloco, ha venduto 33 ritratti ad olio non firmati in tre mesi; e con i soldi guadagnati, arrivato a Parigi all'età di 20 a marzo 1846.
Dopo essere arrivato a Parigi Bouguereau è diventato uno studente presso l'École des Beaux-Arts; e per completare la sua formazione formale nel disegno, ha frequentato dissezioni anatomiche e ha studiato costumi storici e archeologia. Nel 1848 ha creato l'uguaglianza prima della morte (Uguaglianza prima della morte), il suo primo quadro Bmajor.
Successivamente ha ottenuto un posto nello studio di François-Édouard Picot, dove ha studiato pittura in stile accademico; producendo Dante e Virgilio all'inferno c1850, che è un primo esempio della sua opera d'arte neoclassica.
Durante la sua vita Bouguereau godette di una notevole popolarità in Francia e negli Stati Uniti, e ricevette numerosi riconoscimenti ufficiali, mentre si diverte a essere pagato il prezzo più alto per la sua opera d'arte.
